ROO는 얄루의 ‘언더워터 트릴로지’의 완결편 영상 작업으로, 2024년 경기도미술관(GMOMA)에서 열린 작가의 첫 개인전이자 첫 미술관 전시에서 공개되었다. 이 영상은 전시 공간 내 정자 형태의 파빌리온 안에 설치되었으며, 해조류에서 영감을 받아 광합성으로 진화한 포스트-휴먼 종족 ‘호모 파울리넬라(Homo Paulinella)’의 여정을 따라간다.

작품의 배경이 되는 ‘Pickled City’는 기후 붕괴, 조상들의 기억, 기술-문화의 잔재가 퇴적되어 형성된 미래 아시아의 형광 도시로, 호모 파울리넬라는 이곳에서 인간 중심적 사고를 넘어서는 새로운 서사의 매개체가 된다. CG 애니메이션, 층위적인 사운드, 시적인 내레이션으로 구현된 ROO는 영상 매체를 통한 경험을 실험적으로 확장하며, 조형 설치, 가상 세계 구축, 몰입형 시각 언어를 결합한 디지털 시네마의 새로운 가능성을 제시한다. 이 작업은 정체성과 존재를 사유하는 방식에 있어, 가상의 생태, 의례적 미학, 미래적 신화 구축을 통해 부드럽고 유령 같은 생존의 비전을 제시한다.

이번 GMOMA 전시는 ‘언더워터 트릴로지’의 세 챕터인 , , 를 하나의 통합된 공간 안에 재설치하고 재맥락화하였다. 각 작업은 트릴로지의 상징적 요소를 반영한 새로운 건축적 구조 속에서 선보였으며, ROO의 누각(nu-gak), MOON:Gate, MOT:Pond 등의 공간 장치가 그 연속성을 강화하였다. 전시는 홀로그램 스크린, 바닥 프로젝션, 시청각 레이어링 등을 통해, 디지털 의례, 종 간 기억, 문화적 퇴적물이 뒤섞이는 시적인 포스트-휴먼 우주론을 제안하였다. 이는 인간 이후의 삶을 애도하고, 돌연변이적으로 상상하며, 끊임없이 이어지는 액체적 우화를 구성한다.

ROO is the culminating video work in Yaloo’s Underwater Trilogy, premiering as part of her first solo and first museum exhibition at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (GMOMA) in 2024. Set within a pavilion inside Birthday Garden, the video follows Homo Paulinella—a post-human species evolved from humans through photosynthetic adaptation, inspired by seaweed. Inhabiting Pickled City, a speculative, bioluminescent metropolis set in future Asia—built from the sediment of climate collapse, ancestral memory, and techno-cultural residue—Homo Paulinella becomes a conduit for a new, non-anthropocentric narrative of life. Rendered through CG animation, layered sound, and poetic narration, ROO rigorously experiments with mediated experiences of the moving image. It expands the possibilities of digital cinema by merging sculptural installation, speculative worldbuilding, and immersive visual language. The work reframes identity and being through speculative ecology, ritual aesthetics, and future myth-making—offering a soft, haunting vision of persistence. The GMOMA exhibition brought together all three chapters of the Underwater Trilogy—Birthday Garden, Homo Paulinella: The Lab, and Pickled City—into a unified, spatially-driven environment. Each work was re-installed and re-contextualized within newly created architectural structures that echoed the trilogy’s symbolic anchors: ROO’s nu-gak (traditional Korean pavilion), MOON:Gate, and MOT:Pond, enhancing the continuity of their shared world. Through holographic screens, floor projection, and audio-visual layering, the exhibition proposed a poetic post-human cosmology—where digital ritual, interspecies memory, and cultural sediment coalesce into an aqueous fable that mourns, mutates, and imagines life beyond the human.
